Chapter 269 Smile
As Sherry finished speaking, the surrounding beastmen responded enthusiastically, saying, "Don't worry, Sister Sherry!"
"Leave it to us, Lady Sherry!"
"Lord Leon, Lady Eve." Several orcs bowed respectfully, their movements not quite standard, but their attitude was very sincere.
Shirley nodded in satisfaction and continued to lead the two deeper into the manor. After passing through the vineyard, an elegant white building came into view.
Unlike most of the buildings in the shrine, which are ornate and extravagant, it leans more towards a combination of practicality and aesthetics.
Stepping inside, the interior decoration is equally impressive. Instead of excessive displays of gold and silver jewelry, the house is simply furnished with practical furniture.
"His Highness doesn't like those ostentatious things," Sherry explained, noticing Li Ang's scrutinizing gaze.
"He often said that wealth should be used to improve life and promote progress, not to be piled up in the house to show off."
Li Ang nodded, agreeing with this statement.
Led by Shirley, the three arrived at the hall inside the house. Shirley then summoned two sheep-woman maids wearing neat aprons. They had fluffy white curly hair and small curved horns.
"Take Lord Leon and Lady Eve to the suite on the east side of the second floor," Sherry instructed the two maids.
"Also, you two will be responsible for serving these two distinguished guests during their stay at the manor. Remember not to be impolite."
"Yes, Lady Sherry," the two maids replied in unison.
Shirley then turned to Leon and Eve, her tone apologetic: "Please rest well, both of you. I must hurry back to His Highness's side. The city is in dire need of rebuilding and we desperately need manpower. If you need anything, just ring the bell inside the house to call them."
Li Ang nodded understandingly: "Go ahead and get back to work."
Guided by two sheep-woman maids, Leon and Eve went up the softly carpeted stairs to the second floor and arrived at the suite at the end of the corridor.
The suite includes a spacious living room and two adjacent bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. The living room windows offer excellent views of the vineyards and distant hills.
The maids quickly prepared hot water and clean clothes. Li Ang was given a comfortable set of silk casual clothes, while Eve was given an exquisite elven-style robe.
"Please, both of you, wash up and rest. Tea and refreshments will be served shortly," the older maid said respectfully. "If you need anything, please ring the silver bell on the living room table, and we will come immediately."
After saying this, the two bowed, quietly withdrew, and gently closed the door behind them.
The living room fell silent, with only the faint chirping of birds and the rustling of the wind through the grape leaves coming from outside the window.
Li Ang and Eve exchanged a glance, and almost simultaneously let out a sigh of relief, their faces showing expressions of immense relief.
Having gone through a life-or-death battle, turning the tide from a desperate situation to this sudden peaceful environment, the stark contrast left them somewhat dazed. The two first went to the washroom separately to wash away the dust and bloodstains on their bodies, and then changed into clean new clothes.
"Please sit down, Professor." Li Ang gestured to the soft sofa in the living room. "You look like you need some rest."
Eve did not refuse. She was indeed tired, not only physically but also mentally. Being imprisoned in an unfamiliar environment, silently awaiting her fate of death, witnessing Leon's death, and then being miraculously rescued—all of this happened in a short period of time. Even with the willpower of a fourth-level wizard, she could not help but feel somewhat exhausted.
She sat down on the sofa, sinking slightly into the soft cushions. Li Ang walked to the window, looked at the scenery outside, then turned around to check if the door was closed properly. He also set up a simple soundproofing array around the living room to ensure that the conversation would not be overheard by any passing servants.
After doing all that, he sat down in the chair opposite Eve.
Just then, a soft knock came at the door, and one of the sheep-woman maids came in carrying a tray with two steaming cups of black tea on it.
The teacup is an exquisite gilded porcelain piece, and the tea soup has a reddish-brown color, exuding a faint aroma of milk and tea.
The maid gently placed the teacup on the tea table in front of the two of them, then set off a small dish of delicate refreshments. After bowing again, she quietly withdrew.
The two of them were left alone in the living room again.
The aroma of tea rose gently, filling the air, while sunlight streamed through the window, casting bright spots of light on the floor.
Everything seemed so peaceful and serene, a world apart from the life-and-death struggle on the altar just hours earlier.
Li Ang picked up his teacup, gently blew on the steam, and took a small sip. He looked at Eve and found that she was also looking at him. Her light blue eyes held a complex mix of emotions: weariness, relief, curiosity, worry, and many other things that Li Ang couldn't decipher at the moment.
Eve spoke first, her voice soft yet clear to Leon: "Thank you, Leon. Thank you—for coming to save me."
She paused, a faint yet exceptionally gentle smile curving her lips. "I never imagined—that a mere apprentice I took in to complete a mission would not only become a level three wizard in less than a year, but also—"
Her gaze fell on Li Ang, scrutinizing him from head to toe, as if she were getting to know this student anew: "—He has grown to the point where he can fight against the Elven Royal Court alone, and even kill a half-step legendary powerhouse."
There was no jealousy or doubt in her tone, only pure gentleness and a hint of pride.
Looking at the gentle smile that was different from the ones he had seen before, Li Ang suddenly felt that everything he had done before was worth it.
He put down his teacup and laughed, a hint of youthful embarrassment in his smile: "Actually—it's not that amazing. A lot of things were just coincidences, and also thanks to everyone's help. August, Sherry, Mia, Lillian—without them, I couldn't have done anything on my own."
"But that's precisely what makes you special. You always manage to make comrades you can rely on, whether in Lelita or here."
Eve picked up her teacup, took a small sip, and a comfortable expression appeared on her face. The hot tea and quiet environment did indeed help relax her tense nerves.
She put down her teacup, straightened up slightly, and although she still looked somewhat tired, her eyes were much clearer: "Well then—tell me. How did you get here? I remember Avalon should be the back side of a space completely isolated from the outside world."
Leon knew this problem was bound to come sooner or later, so he organized his thoughts and started from the day Ginny found him, and then the two of them discovered Eve's disappearance.
