Chapter 14 Threat
Chapter 14 Threat
Kurt's eyes flashed with a resolute coldness: "There's no time to lose. I'll go prepare right away. You stay in your room and pretend you know nothing."
"The opportune moment to act is fifteen minutes after the midnight bells. At that time, the shadow puppets patrolling inside the tower will enter a brief recharge state, which is when surveillance is at its weakest."
Jona nodded vigorously, her fingertips slightly cold with excitement and nervousness: "Understood, brother. Be careful."
Kurt silently blended into the shadows of the hallway outside the door, as if he himself were part of the darkness.
Jona closed the door, leaning against the cold stone door, her heart pounding in her chest.
She both anticipated the potential benefits the ring might bring and felt a vague sense of unease—
Clara's smug and fearless demeanor remained a thorn in her side.
The wizard tower was quiet in the dead of night, free from the daytime noise of new apprentices arriving. However, it was not entirely silent. In the distance, the dull thud of an unknown experiment failing could be heard, mixed with a few suppressed screams, before silence returned.
This is the daily routine of the apprentices.
The midnight bells, heavy and far-reaching, pierced through the layers of stone walls and echoed twelve times within the tower.
One quarter past midnight.
Clara was assigned a room in the most remote corner of the newcomers' quarters; it was narrow, damp, and the walls were covered with icy water droplets.
He lay on the cold stone bed, not meditating, but simply closing his eyes to rest, his breathing long and steady.
In the dim light, the antique ring seemed to be nothing more than an inconspicuous shadow on his finger.
hiss--
An extremely faint, hissing sound, like a snake flicking its tongue, came from outside the door.
Immediately afterwards, a wisp of almost invisible gray smoke, as if it were a living thing, silently seeped in from below the door crack and quickly spread along the ground.
The smoke carried a pungent, metallic, corrosive odor mixed with the smell of a rotting swamp.
Paralysis and miasma.
Kurt's favorite opening tactic is to quickly paralyze the prey's nerves, rendering it incapable of resistance.
Klar remained with his eyes closed, seemingly oblivious. Smoke quickly filled the small room, clinging to his robes and trying to seep into his mouth and nose.
Just then, a simple bracelet on Clara's wrist moved very slightly.
The bracelet, which had no novelty on the outside, had a tiny rune on its inner circle that flickered extremely briefly, so faintly as to be like an illusion.
The gray miasma that had permeated his surroundings was instantly sucked in and swallowed up by an invisible vortex, disappearing without a trace! The strange smell in the room also vanished in an instant.
In the shadows outside the door, Kurt's brow furrowed sharply.
He clearly felt that the paralyzing miasma he had released had lost its connection, as if it had been completely erased by some force.
"Something's definitely fishy!" Alarm bells rang in his mind, but greed overcame his vigilance and also aroused a stronger ferocity.
"Click-clack".
The stone door, protected by a magical array, opened slowly as if it were completely unguarded.
Kurt's figure flashed into the room like a ghost, so fast that he left only a blur in his wake.
He was shrouded in a thick, inky black mist that not only distorted the light but also emitted a nauseating aura that could instantly cause a low-level apprentice to suffer a splitting headache and a mental breakdown.
Level Zero Sorcery - Spirit Robe.
He didn't waste any words; his goal was clear—Klar's heart!
An arrow, shrouded in black mist and seemingly solid, hurtled towards Krall's chest with a piercing whistling sound.
This is a full-force attack from a second-level apprentice, containing dark energy powerful enough to tear rocks apart!
Level 0 sorcery - Dark Pierce.
Kurt's face already revealed a savage grin of certainty, as if he could already see the ring changing hands and the other person's heart being pierced.
However, just as the deadly elemental arrow was about to strike Klar's robes—
hum!
Clara finally opened her eyes.
In the dim light, those eyes were calm and undisturbed, as if they had foreseen all of this.
What made Kurt's pupils shrink even more was the left hand that Clara raised, the one wearing the bracelet!
The bracelet is no longer so ordinary.
A visible, pale golden halo, flowing like water, instantly spread from the ring, forming a semi-transparent oval shield that perfectly enveloped Krall's entire body!
"Bang!!!"
Kurt's dark piercing blade, powerful enough to tear through steel, slammed into the pale gold shield!
The shockwave from the elemental impact even forced Kurt to take a step back, but the attacked shield remained completely undamaged.
"How is that possible?"
Kurt's face was filled with disbelief.
Jona clearly said that this kid named Clara might have a ring that was a witchcraft item, but she didn't say that his bracelet might be one too!
Upon seeing Kurt, a hint of doubt appeared on Clara's previously composed face:
"Who are you?"
Clearly, he hadn't been paying attention to Jona's movements at the time.
Upon hearing Clara's question, Kurt had no intention of answering him, and instead fell into hesitation.
Jona had no reason to lie to herself, which meant that this Clara possessed a magical artifact that Jona was unaware of.
Judging from the effects of this sorcery item, it wouldn't be easy for me to break through it on my own, not to mention I don't know if this Krall has any other sorcery items.
At the very least, Kurt didn't know what the ring was for.
But to just give up like this...
A surge of intense greed and resentment welled up within Kurt.
I know the power of that bracelet from before; it's definitely not something simple.
Thinking of this, Kurt regained his composure and said to Clara:
"Give me the bracelet and ring on your hand, and I will guarantee your safety in this wizard tower from now on."
Hearing Kurt's words, Clara was almost amused by his own words.
"You came to ambush me in the middle of the night, and when you realized you couldn't win, you wanted me to give you the stuff? Are you still half asleep?"
The air in Clara's room seemed to freeze.
Kurt's anger and embarrassment almost materialized into flames, and the black mist surrounding him churned violently, revealing the intense turmoil within him.
Klar's sarcastic remark, "You're still half asleep," was like a resounding slap across his proud second-level apprentice dignity.
In the dog-eat-dog world of the Wizard Tower, to be so humiliated after a failed sneak attack is an utter disgrace.
"You ungrateful brat!"
Kurt's voice was squeezed out from between his teeth, with a harsh, metallic scraping quality.
"You think you can rest easy with just a tortoise shell? There are plenty of ways to make you disappear without a trace in the Wizard's Tower!"
"Yeah?"
Clara slowly sat up from the stone bed, her movements composed.
Those calm eyes were now filled with scrutiny and...undisguised mockery.
"For example? Like you, sneaking in like a rat in a sewer, unable to bite off a tough nut, then starting to bark?"
"You're asking for it!" Kurt was completely enraged. His reason snapped under the weight of greed and repeated humiliation!
Just as Kurt was about to erupt again—
Clara's expression suddenly changed. She turned to the corner of the room and questioned him sharply:
"Who?!"
