Chapter 15 Shocking Change
Chapter 15 Shocking Change
Mysticism?
Ancient legends and power?
If Su Changming had heard William ask this question before returning from overseas, he probably would have directly replied, "What is this guy babbling about?"
However, after experiencing a series of recent events, he now knows very well that the question this guy asked is real.
The world's structure and trajectory will be different when beings possess extraordinary power.
Just like he had never quite understood how the Great Qian Dynasty had replaced the two dynasties of his previous life and lasted for five hundred years, it was completely unscientific.
However, this is quite fantastical!
For a royal family that possesses extraordinary power, as long as they firmly grasp this power, suppress destiny, and continue the dynasty's reign, it is obviously much simpler and more brutal than mere political maneuvering.
As for William's question, Su Changming's answer was—I'm just an ordinary Chinese language teacher.
"Professor William, what exactly are you referring to as mysticism and ancient legends?"
Su Changming smiled and asked in a gentle tone:
Does it refer to romantic metaphors in literary rhetoric? Or does it refer to the folk tales of fox spirits and ghosts found in *Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio*?
The students below the stage looked at each other, their eyes mostly filled with confusion.
Although the liberation of thought is advocated these days, the style of things has changed too quickly.
Is it appropriate for a foreign professor who teaches biological anatomy to come to a Chinese literature class and talk about feudal superstition?
However, a very few people in the crowd showed thoughtful expressions.
For example, Yao Xiwei, who is sitting in the middle.
Her gaze darted back and forth between Su Changming and William.
Besides, there were a few well-informed students in the corner, heads down, whispering amongst themselves with cryptic expressions.
William seemed oblivious to the subtle shift in the atmosphere. He shrugged and said with a sincere and regretful expression:
"Oh, Professor Su, I wasn't referring to literature."
He sighed, a hint of lingering fear flashing in his azure eyes:
"To be honest, I have a very good friend who recently returned from London. Unfortunately, he was on the very ship that was rumored to be the Victoria."
Upon hearing these words, a low gasp of surprise rippled through the classroom.
Clearly, rumors about that ship had already spread throughout Sheng Hai.
It's the Victoria again.
Su Changming's heart skipped a beat, but he remained calm on the surface, only raising his eyebrows slightly as if he were listening attentively.
“My friend was originally a staunch materialist,” William said, gesturing vividly, “but since that night, he’s been a completely different person. He said he saw a scroll of hell, a horror that science can’t explain…”
"From that day on, he completely converted to Christianity and became a devout believer. He said that only the light of the Lord could protect him and allow him to sleep peacefully in this crazy world."
At this point, William suddenly turned his head, his blue eyes looking directly at Su Changming, his tone full of concern and curiosity:
"Professor Su, I heard you only recently returned to China. May I ask, do you have any inside information about the Victoria incident? Or... were you also on that ship at the time?"
"I only saw a few words about the Victoria in the newspaper."
Su Changming shook his head without changing his expression, his tone tinged with regret:
"When I returned to China, I was on a German merchant ship and was neither fortunate nor unfortunate enough to experience that incident."
He paused, then added:
"As for the terrifying scenes your friend described, I think it's common for people to experience hallucinations under extreme panic and rough sea conditions. In such cases, seeking help from the police or relevant government agencies might be more effective than seeking help from 'God.'"
"Oh, that's true."
William nodded thoughtfully, seemingly accepting the answer.
He scratched his head somewhat sheepishly, giving a slightly apologetic smile:
"I'm sorry, Professor Su, I was just being a bit paranoid. You know, researchers always like to get to the bottom of the unknown."
"It's alright, curiosity is the ladder of human progress," Su Changming said with a light laugh.
"Ring ring—"
Just then, the bell rang at the perfect moment.
"Alright, that's all for today's lesson. Class dismissed."
Su Changming announced the end of get out of class and was preparing to pack up his lesson plan and leave.
However, he clearly underestimated his own damn charm.
No sooner had he finished speaking than some people had already gone to block the door.
"Professor Su! I have another question about *Guan Zhi of Classical Chinese Prose* that I would like to ask you!"
"Mr. Su, could you elaborate on that Western anecdote you just mentioned?"
"Professor Su, where do you live? Do you need someone to cook for you?"
"This is really scarce," Su Changming looked up and saw that the speaker was a girl.
In a flash.
The podium was quickly surrounded by a group of energetic students.
More than half of them are female students.
That enthusiasm left Su Changming somewhat at a loss.
On the other hand, William's popularity was just as high.
He was, after all, a foreign teacher, handsome, fluent in Chinese, humorous and approachable, and was soon surrounded by a group of students.
"Professor William, what happened to that friend you mentioned?" a curious student asked.
William signed autographs for the students while shrugging somewhat helplessly:
"To be honest, I'd like to know too."
"Ever since he joined that church, he's become all eccentric. We used to go for a drink every few days, but now... I haven't seen him for almost a week."
He sighed, a hint of worry in his voice:
"I hope God will truly protect him."
The classroom was noisy, filled with youthful energy and laughter.
While dealing with the enthusiastic female students, Su Changming glanced out the window out of the corner of his eye.
It faces the school's laboratory building, which is also where William usually works.
The red brick exterior walls, under the winter sun, exuded a weathered, aged feel.
Just then.
"ah--!!!"
A heart-wrenching scream abruptly shattered the tranquility of the campus.
Followed by.
"Bang!"
A dull thud was heard as something heavy fell to the ground.
The classroom fell into a deathly silence.
Everyone's smiles froze on their faces.
Su Changming suddenly rushed to the window.
Below the red brick laboratory building, on the cement ground, lay a twisted human figure.
The blood was spreading rapidly, like a flamboyant red flower blooming at midday.
Someone jumped off a building.
