Dust and debris rained down from the ceiling from the chaos unfolding below.
Arlyn steadied himself again while gripping his twin swords tightly as he kept his eyes on Laston. Sylra did the same, her stance shifting slightly, ready to strike at any opening.
They were able to steadied himselves quickly because they were used to the uneven ground of the forest and trees.
Aerchon, however, didn’t hide his frustration. His grip on his sword tightened.
"You act like this is nothing," he said, eyes locked onto Laston. "But we both know that blast meant something, right? Saeldir and Vael just tore through one of your power sources."
Laston chuckled, his eye flashing as he tapped his metallic fingers against his armor.
"Yes, but yet here I stand and unbothered," he said. "Your Archmage friends may have disrupted one power soirce but I have contingencies. Do you think I built all of this without expecting setbacks?"
His words sent a chill through them. Arlyn exchanged a brief glance with Sylra, the same unease settling in both of them.
The explosion should have weakened his army somehow. It should have thrown him off balance, yet he remained composed.
No, actually more than that, he seemed almost entertained.
"Arrogance will be your downfall, uncle. Just like before," Aerchon growled and start stepping forward again. His sword shining with Magic energy as if the sword itself responding to his growing fury.
Laston sighed, rolling his shoulder as if disappointed. "You’re right. I’m not underestimating you again," he said, his tone eerily calm. "But I made a plan. And I just know exactly how this will end."
Then Laston also moved.
He became faster than before again, his cybernetic enhancements flaring with new intensity.
He closed the distance between them in an the blink of an eye and sending attack at Aerchon with enough force to send him sliding back despite he was blocking the blow.
Sparks erupted as Magic metal clashed against enchanted steel.
Arlyn and Sylra rushed in at the same time. Arlyn moving his twin swords while Sylra vanished into the shadows and positioning herself for a lethal strike.
He quickly scanned the battlefield. Sylra had already pulled herself up from where she had been thrown, her daggers still in her grip. Arlyn was also back on his feet, his eyes locked onto Laston.
They had received Saeldir’s message too. He could see it in their expressions. Frustration. Resentment. But also understanding.
Laston tilted his head, watching them with amusement. He could sense the shift in the air, the hesitation in their stances.
"Thinking of running already?" he mocked. "Go on, then. If you can."
Aerchon’s teeth ground together, his fingers twitching with the urge to charge at him again.
"Don’t attac again. We need to regroup!" Saeldir’s voice cut through his rage. "There’s no point. You can’t fight him and his forces. You need to escape. Now."
Aerchon exhaled sharply through his nose. "Fine."
He flicked his gaze to Sylra and Arlyn. No words were needed. They understood.
Then, without warning, he hurled a blast of Magic at Laston. It wasn’t an attack meant to wound, it was a distraction. The surge of energy exploded in a bright burst, forcing Laston to shield his eyes for the briefest second.
That was all they needed.
"Move!" Aerchon said.
Arlyn and Sylra reacted instantly. Sylra disappeared into the shadows, her form flickering away like a wisp of smoke. Arlyn followed Aerchon, the two of them dashing toward the nearest window.
Laston growled in annoyance, his vision clearing just in time to see them retreating.
Then he raised his cybernetic arm. A pulse of energy formed in his palm, ready to fire—
But before he could release it, another explosion rocked the tower. Its came from below again, sending another violent tremor through the structure.
Laston hesitated. Did Saeldir actually managed to destroy a lot of his army?
Aerchon didn’t look back.
He pushed forward, leading the escape. They weren’t safe yet. They still had to reach Saeldir and Vael and they had to get out of here before Laston decided to truly unleash his power.
