Chapter 136 The Wandering Spellcaster
Kane nodded slightly, patiently listening to the other party explain the mission.
The task was not complicated: a cargo ship loaded with spices had disappeared after leaving the port, so the Duke's mansion commissioned local professionals to investigate and search for it.
The mission has very clear requirements for participants: they must be professionals, and preferably have relevant experience in water combat.
The entire process only requires investigating clues about the missing cargo ship; there is no requirement to find the ship or the spices.
At that moment, a new mission appeared before Kane's eyes.
Side Quest: Investigate the Missing Ship
[Introduction: A cargo ship belonging to Duke Eisenberg's merchant guild has gone missing, and they are gathering suitable adventurers to investigate.]
[Reward: Experience or skill points depending on the situation]
Kane pondered for a moment, then looked at Sophia and asked, "As a duke, doesn't he have any special powers at his disposal? Besides, why aren't the port's sheriffs taking action?"
""
Sophia shook her head slightly and explained, "Your Excellency, you come from the Dark Forest, so you are probably unaware of the political landscape of Susas."
Although the Duke had a guard, every time this force was deployed, it attracted attention from all sides, especially the royal court.
Therefore, under normal circumstances, the esteemed duke would never easily mobilize his personal guard if the matter could be resolved by adventurers or mercenaries.
Kane nodded in understanding, and Sofia added, "Moreover, for many people, this is also a rare opportunity."
"An opportunity?" Kane's eyes flashed with surprise, and his face showed a look of doubt.
Seeing his confusion, Sophia further explained: "If you can successfully complete this mission, you can make a reasonable request to the Duke in exchange for what you want."
Many mercenaries and adventurers wanted to take this opportunity to join the Duke's guard.
Kane's eyes flickered slightly, and he thought to himself: Is he seeking a stable government job? But he wasn't surprised.
Looking across countries, the situation of mercenaries and adventurers is already precarious.
Mercenaries live a life of constant danger, while adventurers, though less risky, are mostly low-status and earn less than ordinary laborers employed by merchant guilds.
Kane tapped his fingertips lightly on his palm, lost in thought. Seeing this, Sophia asked softly, "Your Excellency, are you planning to accept this mission? However—your identity might present some trouble."
Kane pondered for a moment and instantly understood her unspoken meaning—his pure-blooded drow identity was too conspicuous and could easily attract unnecessary trouble.
After weighing the risks, he slowly said, "Forget it, I won't take this mission for now."
Sophia didn't ask any further questions, nodded, and then recommended a few other tasks to him.
Kane remained calm and noncommittal, only instructing her to keep an eye out for suitable missions before turning and leaving.
Having walked a short distance, Kane muttered to himself, "The identity of a drow elf is indeed inappropriate, but if I were to appear as a pure human, the situation would be different—"
The next morning, the dock was bustling with noise.
Kane had transformed back into a human, donned simple and lightweight gear, and arrived at the mission rendezvous point following the address, where he immediately spotted the other participants in the mission.
Besides him, there were more than a dozen other people present, of all kinds of professions, from wanderers to warriors.
-
Kane glanced around, deep in thought, when a figure slowly approached him.
It was a long-haired woman who looked at him with a slight smile and greeted him softly, "Hello, friend."
She was dressed in an elegant long robe, slender, with delicate features, and looked to be no more than twenty years old. She also held a small, short cane in her hand.
Kane gazed at her features and subconsciously thought of Talia. After pondering her purpose for coming, he nodded silently.
The woman's smile remained unchanged as she softly asked, "Judging from your expression, you also want to use this mission to join the Duke's guard, right?"
Kane didn't speak, but merely nodded slightly, feigning aloofness.
The woman didn't seem to mind and continued to smile as she said, "To make the mission go more smoothly, how about we team up? My name is Dorothy, and I'm a wandering spellcaster."
""
Kane nodded slightly and gave the pseudonym he had already prepared: "Kate."
As for the suggestion to form a team, his eyes flickered slightly, and he gently shook his head, rejecting the suggestion.
Seeing that he refused, Dorothy did not press him. She smiled, said a few polite words, and then turned to walk towards a few warriors beside her, quickly blending into their ranks.
Kane didn't care at all. Just then, a portly merchant strode over, his gaze sweeping over everyone present, and said loudly, "Besides the spellcasters, we only need five professionals. Half of you will have to leave."
"Halfway?" someone in the crowd immediately retorted loudly, their tone full of dissatisfaction.
"Sir, when you issued the mission, you didn't say you'd eliminate half the people!"
"Exactly! We specifically dropped everything to come here, aren't you just wasting our time?"
Another voice chimed in, echoing the sentiment of discontent.
Hearing the rising and falling protests, the merchant suddenly sneered, his tone arrogant: "This is a dispute between you and the Adventurers' Guild. If you have any objections, go and reason with the sheriff. Don't make a fuss here."
He glanced at the crowd with disdain and added, "Don't think I don't know what you're up to. Duke Eisenberg's guard isn't a place just anyone can enter."
The moment the words "Duke Eisenberg" were uttered, the noisy crowd fell silent.
Even the two soldiers who had been the most indignant just moments before shut their mouths in frustration, their faces full of resentment but daring not to say another word.
Kane, however, remained calm and unconcerned.
The merchant clapped his hands in satisfaction and said, "In short, I'll only keep half of you. You can discuss among yourselves who will stay and who will leave, and don't waste time."
After saying that, he turned and walked to the side, waiting impatiently.
Kane was secretly observing the crowd when, as his gaze shifted slightly, he suddenly felt a heavy pat on his shoulder.
Immediately afterwards, he was surrounded by three people.
The one leading the charge was the very soldier who had first vented his frustrations.
He was a half-elf, with only slightly pointed ears, indicating a very low bloodline concentration.
He was clad in leather armor, staring at Kane with hostility, and said coldly, "You, leave here."
Kane smiled faintly and asked, "The reason?"
The half-elf shrugged, his tone full of sarcasm: "I don't know where you got your information, but this kind of mission is not something a newbie like you, who doesn't even have a single scar, can handle."
Another ranger standing next to him scoffed, "Don't waste your time talking to this newbie."
He stared intently at Kane, threatening him fiercely, "If you know what's good for you, leave on your own. Otherwise, don't blame us for being ruthless. If you get hurt, no one will care."
Kane watched the three of them working together to make things difficult for him, then sighed softly, his tone calm yet carrying an undeniable confidence: "Come at me all at once, don't hold back."
"You're asking for death!" the half-elf roared, and before he finished speaking, he clenched his fist and slammed it into Kane's chest.
Kane, with his keen hearing, raised his hand and grabbed his fist, his blood rushing through his veins.
The half-elf felt a sharp pain in his palm, followed by an irresistible force. His face paled in horror, and he frantically shouted to the other two, "Attack together! Quickly!"
The other two also sensed something was wrong and, without hesitation, immediately threw punches at Kane.
Kane released his grip on the other's hand, and with a slight dodge, easily avoided their attacks.
He then calmly raised his hand to retaliate.
For him, interrupting their attack was a piece of cake.
He glanced to the side and saw that other adventurers were also clashing, pushing and shoving each other, hurling insults, and it looked like they were about to come to blows, making the atmosphere increasingly tense.
Meanwhile, the wandering spellcaster Dorothy stood in a corner not far away, watching everything unfold with a half-smile.
After all, as a spellcaster, she had already secured a spot to participate in the mission and didn't need to get involved in this pointless struggle.
"Damn! He's as agile as a monkey!"
The half-elf threw punches repeatedly, but failed to hit Kane even once. Enraged, he abruptly pressed down on the one-handed sword at his waist.
With a "whoosh," he drew his sword and stared fiercely at Kane.
Kane's eyes narrowed slightly as he pondered: Should he reveal a little of his strength to teach these people a lesson, so they wouldn't keep bothering him?
Just then, a clear, cold female voice suddenly rang out: "Witchcraft Arrow!"
Kane's gaze sharpened as he caught a glimpse of a blue energy arrow shooting swiftly from Dorothy's hand.
It struck the half-elf's hand holding the sword hilt with pinpoint accuracy.
The half-elf cried out in pain, and his one-handed sword clattered to the ground.
Kane slowly turned his head to look at Dorothy, who was leaning against the railing, looking at him with a half-smile.
There was an unfathomable meaning hidden in his eyes.
