Chapter 2700 - 921: The Road to Legend
"What is your correctness? Whose correctness is it?"The headmaster of Jiuyou Academy lightly interrupted the rebuke of the vice principal of First University, playing with the pipe in his hand, and conjured a small tuft of golden yellow tobacco from the void, slowly packing it into the bowl of the pipe.
Professor Emma stared at the small tuft of ’thin tobacco’ that tumbled and struggled at Old Yao’s fingertips, looking at the neat and beautiful scales on it—in the eyes of a Legendary Wizard, those strands of tobacco weren’t lifeless, but golden flood dragons struggling and howling—her gaze unwavering.
"It’s the correctness of truth, the correctness of ’Revelation’."
The Witch’s gaze moved from the ’tobacco’ to the face of the office owner across the desk, at his eyes that shimmered like beetles, lightly repeating the words from ’Revelation’: "—The voice I had first heard from heaven spoke to me once more: ’Go, take the scroll that lies open in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land.’
—So I went to the angel and asked him to give me the little scroll. He said to me: ’Take it and eat it. It will turn your stomach sour, but in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey.’
—I took the little scroll from the angel’s hand and ate it.
—It tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth, but when I had eaten it, my stomach turned sour."
’Revelation’ is a work by the ancient Prophet Saint John, recording many of his prophecies. Although he attributed these visions to the grace of the Holy Spirit, many contemporary researchers believe that these images were observed as he traveled through different timelines.
Similar to numerous prophecy books by ancient prophets like ’Tui Bei Tu’, many prophecies in ’Revelation’ are characterized by ambiguity, exaggeration, and uncertainty, with a sentence often being repeatedly interpreted in many ways by later generations.
Professor Yao wasn’t adept at Divination Skill or had studied ’Revelation’ as extensively as Professor Emma, so naturally, he was uncertain if she really saw anything from that ancient book.
But out of respect for the existence of a similar rank and for the ancient Sage, he slightly restrained his previously flippant tone.
"Compared to Alpha Academy, I think you’re more suited to Atlas."
The headmaster of Jiuyou Academy rotated the pipe in his hand, packing those restless tobaccos tightly, half-serious and half-smoothly commented: "...Only, knowing it would turn sour in your stomach, why pursue that sweetness in your mouth?"
Professor Emma didn’t directly answer the question but continued with her previous topic.
"Long ago, when facing calamities, the Wizards of Atlas would pray to offer their children to the gods, then replace them with calves... Many considered this a civilized progress from an ethical or moral standpoint. But I wouldn’t call such a thing correct, because sacrifice is an ancient magic that follows the principle of equivalent exchange. Any magic progress must follow this principle. The power gained easily will inevitably bring disaster easily."
At this point, she paused briefly and looked out the window: "—Out of respect for Vice Principal Ruoyu, I won’t interfere with your attempt to break the principle of equivalence... but I don’t want those stains on that ’little scroll’. It is a revelation left to us by heaven, a call, a warning, and the future of First University..."
"I understand what you mean."
The headmaster of Jiuyou Academy raised his hands, making a surrender gesture, with a tone of sincere earnestness: "Trust me, no one wants to throw that troublemaker out more than I do... Every morning I wake up, pondering whether to put that brat in a box and let a Green Bird take him back to the Great Ming Pavilion... Of course, this is only chatter in private; I’d never admit to saying such a thing publicly... The problem now is that he joined Jiuyou Academy through formal means and became my student. I know, compared to his other teacher, I am insignificant. But regardless, I am his teacher, he is my student; this relationship is an established fact... So, why don’t you continue to respect this fact, as you have silently observed your ’little scroll’ for the past year and a half, waiting for your ’right time’?"
"Because ’Revelation’ says ’consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place,’" Professor Emma said steadfastly to Professor Yao, with a firm tone: "It knows I can tolerate foolishness but cannot tolerate errors... If I deny my path, what I’ll ultimately lose isn’t just the ’little scroll’."
The issue of ’road’ seems to have reached a point where there’s no room for negotiation.
The headmaster of Jiuyou Academy frowned, slightly pinched his fingertips, pressing them into the pipe, a wisp of green smoke rising with many struggling, wailing phantoms vaguely visible in the smoke.
He took a deep breath and slowly exhaled the smoke.
In no time, the white mist submerged half of his body and even blocked quite a bit of the sunshine falling from the window behind him, causing the entire office to dim considerably.
He waved his hand, trying to disperse the mist before him: "—On whose proposition is more reasonable, I’m afraid a discussion lasting three days and three nights won’t reach any conclusion..."
"Your legend is built upon overcoming your demon nature by not devouring any students while teaching at First University. For any wizard or demon, such a feat is a miracle, a legend."
Professor Emma suddenly spoke, briefly mentioning Old Yao’s ’path’, then commented with a touch of irony: "...It’s amusing, those radicals among the wizards, who feel Moon Council members aren’t pure enough, ultimately chose to support a Great Demon instead..."
"The extreme of darkness is light, and the extreme of light will turn into darkness. The brighter the star, the darker the background."
Old Yao raised his eyebrows, biting his pipe, with a tone of slight discontent: "Haven’t you heard ’put down the butcher knife and become a Buddha immediately’? You think they’ve supported a Great Demon, but in their eyes, I am a more ’pure’ Buddha than most in the school!"
Professor Emma ignored Old Yao’s self-praise.
She lowered her eyelids, retracting her previous irony, as her tone returned to indifference: "...Anyhow, your path is both narrow and sharp enough that you can easily grasp the threads and truths of the legend. But I’m different. I don’t have your ’sharpen your edge’ advantage. I’ve spent my entire life in school, following the rules, staying safe. When choosing a path, I adhered to this conservative mindset, seeking stability and walking the ’correct’ path... The road widened, and perhaps because it was too wide, it lost a true direction.
Until in Black Prison, I saw ’Order’, and found a thread of ’correctness’."
